Dr. Mohammad Awad:

  • Green Networking
Driven by the popularity of multimedia services on a wide range of devices, the demand for all types of traffic, data, voice and video, has been growing exponentially. This is forcing service providers to increase the capacity of their networks by expanding their infrastructure or by deploying overlapping networks, e.g. Edge, LTE, WiMax and WiFi. This is, however, driving the operational cost, energy cost and complexity to grow at a similar rate. In order to keep their services competitive and affordable, service providers need to explore areas to cut-down their costs; going green is one of the promising approaches. Sustainable green networks are energy efficient networks that can sustain the delivery of network traffic while being powered by sustainable energy. The ultimate question behind this line of research is: How can significant reduction in energy consumption be achieved in green communication networks while maintaining stringent performance requirements?
